A Wikipedia page for your company: notability first

Your company can have a Wikipedia article only if it is notable by Wikipedia's standards: significant coverage in multiple independent, reliable, secondary sources. Press releases, sponsored articles and interviews do not count. If you are connected to the company, Wikipedia's conflict of interest rules apply, and paid contributors must disclose who they work for.

The short answer

A Wikipedia article about your company is not something you can simply decide to create. Wikipedia includes organisations that are already notable, which it defines as having received significant coverage in multiple independent, reliable, secondary sources. If that coverage exists, an article may be possible. If it does not, no amount of writing skill will keep a page live, and attempts to force one usually end in deletion and a damaged reputation with Wikipedia's volunteer editors. For UAE companies, the honest first step is a notability assessment, followed by a transparent process that respects Wikipedia's conflict of interest and paid editing rules.

Why companies want a Wikipedia page

The benefits are real. A Wikipedia article often appears prominently when people search for your company name, it is widely used as a reference by journalists and investors, and information from Wikipedia and its sister project Wikidata feeds knowledge panels and the training data of AI assistants. That last point matters more each year: a neutral, well-sourced article helps tools such as ChatGPT describe your company accurately. But Wikipedia is an encyclopaedia, not a marketing channel, and its community enforces that distinction firmly.

What notability means for companies

English Wikipedia has a specific guideline for organisations and companies, often referred to as NCORP. It looks for coverage that meets four tests at the same time:

  • Significant coverage: in-depth discussion, analysis or evaluation of the company, not a passing mention or a single quote.
  • Independent: written by people with no connection to the company, and not substantially based on company-supplied material.
  • Reliable: published by outlets with editorial oversight and a reputation for fact-checking.
  • Secondary: sources that analyse or interpret information, rather than primary documents such as press releases, filings or patents.

The guideline also says that a single significant independent source is almost never sufficient, so multiple such sources are needed.

What does not count

This is where most applications fail. Wikipedia's company notability guideline excludes many types of coverage that marketing teams consider valuable:

Usually does not establish notabilityWhy
Press releases and republished announcementsNot independent of the company
Routine news: launches, hires, funding, resultsNot significant coverage
Sponsored or paid articlesNot independent
Interviews with company executivesContent comes from the company
Directory listings and brief mentionsTrivial coverage

Size, revenue or the number of employees does not create notability by itself, and neither does being well known within your industry if independent media have not written about you in depth.

Conflict of interest and paid editing

If you work for, own or represent the company, or if you hire someone to write about it, you have a conflict of interest under Wikipedia's rules. The conflict of interest guideline says such editors are very strongly discouraged from editing affected articles directly. Instead, they should propose changes on the article's talk page, for example with an edit request, and accept that independent editors may or may not act on them. For new articles, the usual route is to submit a draft through Wikipedia's Articles for Creation review rather than publishing it directly.

Paid editing has an additional requirement. The Wikimedia Foundation's Terms of Use require anyone editing for pay to disclose their employer, client and affiliation. Agencies that hide this, use multiple accounts or promise guaranteed approval are breaking the rules, and pages created that way are often deleted, with the company's name attached to the violation.

Arabic Wikipedia and other language editions

Each Wikipedia language edition is run by its own volunteer community with its own policies and standards. An English article does not automatically justify an Arabic one, or the reverse. For UAE companies, strong coverage in respected Arabic-language media can support an Arabic Wikipedia article, while English coverage supports the English edition. Plan sources for each language rather than translating one article and hoping it survives review.

A responsible process

  1. Notability assessment. Collect every independent article about the company and test it honestly against the criteria above.
  2. Close the gaps first. If coverage is thin, invest in genuine earned media, research and expertise that journalists choose to cover. Our digital marketing consultancy can help plan this.
  3. Draft neutrally. Write in an encyclopaedic tone, citing only reliable sources, with no promotional language.
  4. Disclose and submit. Declare any connection or payment as Wikipedia requires and submit through Articles for Creation.
  5. Maintain properly. After publication, request corrections on the talk page rather than editing the article yourself.

Our Wikipedia page creation service follows this process and starts with an honest assessment. If your company is not ready, we will tell you, and suggest what would change that.

What to expect once an article is live

A published Wikipedia article does not belong to the company. Anyone can edit it, and if reliable sources report a controversy, a dispute or a weak year, editors may add that information too. Reviews of drafts can also take time, because Articles for Creation is run by volunteers. Go in with realistic expectations: the goal is an accurate, neutral and well-sourced summary of your company, not a polished brochure, and that neutrality is exactly why readers and AI systems trust it.

If you are not notable yet

You still have strong alternatives for search and AI visibility: a complete Google Business Profile, a clear About page with structured data, accurate LinkedIn and directory profiles, a Wikidata item where appropriate, and consistent facts across all of them. These help search engines and AI assistants understand your entity while you build the independent coverage that notability requires. Our AI search optimisation team can align these signals.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

Can any company have a Wikipedia page?

No. Wikipedia only includes companies that meet its notability guideline, which requires significant coverage in multiple independent, reliable, secondary sources. Press releases, sponsored articles, interviews and routine announcements do not count. Many successful businesses are not yet notable by these standards, regardless of their size or revenue.

Can I write my own company's Wikipedia article?

Wikipedia's conflict of interest guideline very strongly discourages people connected to a company from editing its article directly. They should propose changes on the talk page and use the Articles for Creation review for new drafts. If you are paid, the Wikimedia Terms of Use require disclosure of your employer, client and affiliation.

Can an agency guarantee my Wikipedia page will be approved?

No. Volunteer editors decide what stays on Wikipedia, and no agency controls that. Promises of guaranteed approval, undisclosed paid editing or the use of multiple accounts break Wikipedia's rules and often lead to deletion. A responsible agency starts with an honest notability assessment and follows the disclosure process.

Do I need separate Arabic and English Wikipedia articles?

Each language edition has its own community and standards, so one article does not automatically justify another. If your company has strong independent coverage in Arabic media, an Arabic article may be possible; English coverage supports the English edition. Plan sources for each language separately rather than simply translating.
